Redefining the Beauty in Identity Project
The above dance piece is a demonstration choreographed as an expression of a young girl's identity journey challenging beauty standards and our need to conform to societal pressures. Through this artistic expression, Girls on a Mission would like to provide programing to the Brooklyn community and surrounding areas in how we develop our sense of self. With this idea in mind we desire to apply for a grant that will help us create a self exploratory dance piece which will be documented and explored.

This grant will help the organization provide concrete opportunities to provide the youth and community members access to the art form of dance/movement and prose to deal with these issues. It will also provide unique opportunities for a wide range of community choreographers to grow into providing artistic expressions that are more community based as they work with students, community members and residents from all ages and backgrounds in their reference to cultural/identity practices that they consciously or subconsciously abide by. Finding ways for community members to be authentic in their way of thinking and providing spaces where participants feel safe enough to deal with and heal from unconscious trauma that produces such ways of feeling and behaving in our everyday livelihood. It will help the organization and community participants be more conscious of the responsibility it takes for those who participate to be completely vulnerable in sharing their experiences.
The completion of these activities will give the organization a broader range of real life experiences to pull from when developing their students' creative voices and addressing this important issue of being open to the experiences of all cultures that somehow continues to plague all nationalities. These activities are the right step in celebrating the creative journey of all communities as we want to encourage more youth and teaching artists to be true to who they are as we address their cultural identity in a way that is most meaningful to them. Being authentic in our purpose and touching on topics that aren’t fully addressed brings a healthier and more loving community. We hope to bring through this creative journey, a more well-rounded discussion and healing opportunity for those who have been and continue to be affected by such practices that may divide us instead of bringing us together. Through this process, the organization will develop our research as we plan to use data of the neighborhoods in which we collaborate with to influence how we address the topic of cultural identity in relationship to all cultures we connect with in hope of bridging the cultural gap.

Girls on a Mission Inc. celebrated their First Fundraising Gala in Egg Harbor City, NJ, February 2023. We appreciated the friends and family who were able to participate. Special thanks to DEW Ministries for showing up and showing out and blessing us with their gift of dance!
This year, we're celebrating in Brooklyn, NY where Girls on a Mission Inc. FIRST launched its program for middle school girls. We were able to provide an afterschool curriculum that developed into an enrichment program during the academic school day which enable us to bring 10 girls and their mothers to Costa Rica and Jamaica for its first ever Mother-Daughter retreat.
Upon its completion, Girls on a Mission was able to launch its FIRST Girls on a Mission Jr. program in Minneapolis, Minnesota; meeting the needs of their 4th grade elementary population before COVID-19 took us through a whirlwind. We've been able to continue in our efforts, providing programming during the summer for girls during COVID, in spite of the challenges as well as gained some time to reflect and revamp the programming as we proceed forward! We celebrate this years Fundraising Gala in Brooklyn New York, and we look to raise AT LEAST $20,000 for the upcoming identity projects, as we are seeking to collaborate with more of the surrounding schools.
GIRLS ON A MISSION INC. is always reaching towards brand new audiences to help gain support for the programming we provide our middle school girls as we step into a more multi-cultural curriculum. We are in transition as we're entering into a time where we are redefining our identity, "truthfully and authentically" as the beautiful, smart, uniquely creative living souls that seek to develop the artistic leaders for upcoming generations!
We hope you will be supportive in partnering with us through this unique adventure.

Fundraising Gala 2023:
The 2023 Alexendar Bridgers III STEM Scholarship Recipient has been chosen! She will be studying nursing in the Fall at North Carolina Central University! Congratulations Jade!
We were able to raise money for one scholarship winner, for one of our previous GOAM Inc. members in our first 2023 high school graduating class: Jade! Jade will be attending North Carolina Central University in the Fall of 2023 and majoring in Nursing. She was also one of the young ladies who had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica on our 1st Mother-Daughter Retreat! Here's what Jade had to say about her unique Girls On A Mission experience:
"True role models for young black woman are in short supply when it comes to the images portrayed by the media. According to the media success for young black women is always measured by wealth and/or beauty standards. Very little is set about character development and intelligence. My family has always been careful to lay a foundation for me, but through joining Girls on a Mission, it was amazing to be in a company of girls and women who have the same goals as I did. I did not meet women who measured or valued their lives by money or beauty. Instead these amazing women lived by the content of their character. These were truly world class black women. I have traveled states in my own country but never have had the opportunity to leave the United States until I joined Girls on a Mission. In my trip to Costa Rica, I got to see a small slice and a bigger world of all the possibilities it had to offer. I also learned what it meant to be an ambassador for an organization. However the greatest thing that I have learned was the true definition of successful black women in 2023."
Join us for an evening of dance, celebration and reflection! at our next Fundraising Gala!
We look forward to another most rewarding and memorable event!
